Cambridge certificate “A2 Flyers” is the highest of three Cambridge Young Learners (YLE) qualifications for children up to 12 years old. The qualification proves that students not only acquired an excellent command of the pre-intermediate level of the English language, but they can also well understand various contexts of everyday situations and communicate properly in English. It is an excellent first assessment for children’s journey of learning English. It correlates with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), an international standard for describing language ability. While there is no pass or fail for the qualification, students are rewarded a maximum of five shields for each skill: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
Diamond is Hanlin’s Cambridge YLE lead teacher who conducted the first batch of Hanlin Flyers and ensured that they all got excellent preparation for the exam.
Teacher Diamond: As an educator, I understand that exams can often be daunting for children, as such it is important for students to become familiarized with the exam layout and gain confidence by attempting practice tests. Though my teaching strategies are a bit different from executing IB lessons, I use a number of teaching strategies to ensure the learners are meaningfully engaged, actively participating and become exposed to the effectiveness and value of learning English. These strategies are inclusive but not limited to; cooperative learning, implementation of technological devices, student-centered inquiry and gamification.
Cambridge English has allowed Hanlin students and teachers the freedom to engage in different learning activities beyond the traditional learning style of being behind a desk. Together they enjoyed having conversations and the atmosphere around in areas such as the school’s tennis court, garden and lawn.
Now, that the programme turned out to be a great success, with parents and leaders supporting the journey, we look forward to more and more students joining the Cambridge courses.
